$4.6 million facelift for Lane Cove National Park's Weir Precinct
A $4.6 million facelift for one of Sydney's most popular national parks was unveiled at Lane Cove today by Deputy Premier and Minister for Climate Change and the Environment Carmel Tebbutt.
The multi-million dollar upgrade to Lane Cove National Park includes a refurbishment of the historic Jenkins Hall and improvements to the Weir Precinct.
"Lane Cove National Park is one of the state's most popular parks with more than 600,000 visitors a year and the Weir Precinct is a particular focal point," Ms Tebbutt said.
"This area has now been refurbished to accommodate that demand and the surrounding historic buildings restored for future generations. The renovation includes meeting rooms - which are available for hire - along with a cafe space, outdoor seating and refurbished offices for our National Parks and Wildlife Service staff.
"On the western side of the weir a panoramic wheelchair-accessible boardwalk has been installed which allows all visitors to enjoy the Lane Cove River in safety, away from busy Delhi Road," she said.
Ms Tebbutt said generations of families had brought their children to the area for picnics and these facilities had now been enhanced.
"Around Jenkins Hall there is a new picnic area with new barbecues, shelters and furniture as well as a children's play space. There is also improved car parking with additional spaces for the disabled, which will allow more people to enjoy this beautiful part of Sydney.
"This is a fantastic example of the revitalisation works that are being undertaken in our national parks across the state.
"I invite members of the public to come and experience the beautiful environmental and recreational assets that Lane Cove National Park has to offer," Ms Tebbutt added.
The Weir upgrade was funded by the NSW Government's $38 million Revitalising National Parks Program which invests in capital upgrades to improve visitor facilities and access and to conserve the natural and cultural heritage of NSW parks.
Compensatory funds from the Transport Infrastructure Development Corporation also contributed to the project after access to the park was restricted until late 2007 for construction of the Epping to Chatswood Rail Line under the Lane Cove River.
