“The adoption of a New South Wales bill of rights would serve to take lawmaking power from our democratically elected parliament and hand that power over to unelected judges”

NEW SIX-MONTH REGISTRATION NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

NEW SIX-MONTH REGISTRATION NOW AVAILABLE ONLINE

Monday 17 November 2008

Minister for Roads Michael Daley said motorists now have more flexibility when renewing their car registration, with a new six-month option available to people paying online or over the phone.

Mr Daley said the new short term option means families on a tight budget can choose to spread their registration and CTP insurance costs over two payments each year.

"The NSW Government is committed to providing better services for NSW families and businesses.

"The new six-month registration will take the pressure off people who can't afford a whole year's registration in one go.

"It also gives family budgets more flexibility, so funds can be freed up to pay the mortgage or buy Christmas presents," he said.

Mr Daley said the six-month option was only available online at myRTA.com or by calling 1300 360 782.

"More people are moving towards online registration renewals, and the RTA expects this will increase with the introduction of this new shorter term option.

"Online registration renewals are easy to do and completely secure. It also means you don't have to wait in line at a motor registry.

"The standard 12-month registration won't change, so people can still renew their rego annually at a registry, online or over the phone," he said.

The new short term registration complements other reforms to motor registration introduced on 1 July this year. They include:

  • All new cars and light vehicles purchased in NSW are now exempt from a pink slip for five years, up from the previous three year exemption. Cars under five years are now also exempt from a pink slip; and
  • All pink slips issued in NSW are now transmitted directly to the RTA electronically, allowing registration renewals to be done over the internet or the phone.

To renew your registration online you need to follow these three easy steps:

1. Purchase a 6-month or 12-month CTP green slip

2. Get an e-safety check (previously a pink slip) if your vehicle is more than five years old.

3. Go to myRTA.com or call 1300 360 782
