Study to extend natural gas supply in regional NSW
The Iemma Government will fund a study for the rollout of a $60 million natural gas supply project to towns including Gilgandra and Mudgee, Minister for Energy Ian Macdonald announced today.
"This is a positive step forward in extending the main gas pipeline to towns including Gilgandra, Mudgee, Gulgong, Dunedoo, Coolah, Coonabarabran, Werris Creek, and Quirindi," Mr Macdonald said.
"The study will be undertaken over the next 12 months and will assess the technical, property and investment issues required before the pipeline can proceed.
"A key factor in the success of this project is the assessment of the best way for indigenous people to be involved in the planning, construction and maintenance of the extension.
"Natural gas provides a safe and reliable energy source to residents, businesses and heavy industry - so this extension could provide significant employment and economic benefits to these areas.
"Work has already been undertaken with the ACCC, IPART and DWE for the approval and licensing of the natural gas supply, including high pressure steel pipelines, laterals and town distribution."
Natural gas is already available in some towns in the Central West.
"Natural gas is available in Forbes, Parkes, Narromine, Dubbo and Wellington," Mr Macdonald said.
"A pipeline is also operational between Dubbo and Tamworth, and Local Aboriginal Land Councils were employed in the construction phase and received valuable training in this area.
"The NSW Government is committed to delivering better services and investing in infrastructure which directly benefits hard working individuals, families and businesses in regional NSW."
