NSW Budget

The NSW budget for 06/07 has been announced. I have highlighted some of the things that won’t necessarily get media attention but are excellent initiatives.

New preschool funding means that every child in NSW will have access to preschool.

The government has agreed to fund the wage increase for workers in over 7000 community organisations.

Education funding to reduce class sizes to 24 in year 2. In NSW public schools class sizes in kindergarten are now 20 and year 1 are 22.

Upgrades to train stations to make them accessible, new busways, new buses and new carriages for our train system.

Additional funding for the state broadband service will allow more government agencies to deliver services in regional centres. This in turn is leading to wireless broadband services being provided to an additional 24 rural communities.

Capital spending on arts facilities including the Australian Museum, Opera House, State Library, the Art Gallery and a new contemporary theatre and dance venue in Redfern.

The City and Country Environment Restoration Program will deal with illegal dumping, restore dying rivers and wetlands, fund two new marine parks and provide funding to councils, local businesses and community groups for environmental projects.

Increased funding for dental services.

Increased funding for cancer including increased screening for cervical and breast cancer and more prevention work in melanoma and smoking related cancers.
