"Feminism is a socialist, anti-family, political movement that
encourages women to leave their husbands, kill their children, practice witchcraft, destroy capitalism and become lesbians."

I thought it was about equality...

What happens behind the ballot box?

With the Local Government elections fast approaching, Parliament's Education section is organising a course for the public about what happens ‘Behind the Ballot Box'.

The sessions are free, and include an overview of elections and voting systems around Australia and worldwide; a visit to the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council chambers of the NSW Parliament; a voting simulation and information about the role of parliament and elected representatives in Australian democracy.

Courses will be held on Tuesday 26 August, Wednesday 3 September and Friday 12 September.

New NSW Parliamentary Library Research papers

The NSW Parliamentary Library has recently released two new research reports: The regulation of lobbying and Education in Country and City New South Wales.

Good teachers make a difference - well der

A new study that has been released by Andrew Leigh from ANU - Estimating Teacher Effectiveness. In the ongoing debate about teacher quality, teacher pay and general school improvement this study is worth a look.

Of course - the Federal government has been quick to jump on the study as some sort of repudiation of their simplistic and unworkable 'performance pay' initiative. This misses the point and actually misinterprets some of the findings.

Public Schools at their best

Posted Friday 7 July 06

Today I represented the Minister for Education and Training at the opening of the new school facilities at Belrose Public School.

It was a lovely event that featured a school assembly run by the Prefects and a performance from the 72 piece senior band.

The special assembly also recognised the contribution of the Principal June Wait who will retire this year after 18 years as Principal.

Also honoured was Miss June Penze. Miss Penze has been the cleaner at the school since it’s opening in 1952. For 54 years she has kept the school spotless and in her time has seen the school go from 42 pupil to 456 today.

NSW Budget

The NSW budget for 06/07 has been announced. I have highlighted some of the things that won’t necessarily get media attention but are excellent initiatives.

New preschool funding means that every child in NSW will have access to preschool.

The government has agreed to fund the wage increase for workers in over 7000 community organisations.

Education funding to reduce class sizes to 24 in year 2. In NSW public schools class sizes in kindergarten are now 20 and year 1 are 22.

Upgrades to train stations to make them accessible, new busways, new buses and new carriages for our train system.
