Rees Government - Opening Up Government Information

Yesterday, Premier Nathan Rees released draft legislation for a complete overhaul of the State's FOI Laws.

The changes will bring greater openness and transparency to Government and are based on the presumption that Government information should be accessible to the public.

The Premier was honouring a commitment he made following the release of the Ombudsman's review of FOI laws last year.

Three draft exposure bills are open for public comment until 3 June 2009.

Review of the FOI Act

The NSW Ombudsman has released a discussion paper into the operation and effectiveness of the NSW Freedom of Information Act.

In the almost 20 years since the inception of the FOI Act, there have been changes to the Act, the way governments operate and the technology used to handle government records. These changes have impacted on the effectiveness of this Act in meeting its original objectives.

Because of this the NSW Ombudsman has decided to conduct his own review:
